IN THIS GUIDE · Explain a technical offer without choosing the profession by its label
Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Establish the exact occupational fit
TN requires Canadian or Mexican citizenship and prearranged professional activity in a listed USMCA profession. Identify the applicable qualifications for that profession and document that the applicant meets them. Do not treat an alternative credential recognized in one occupation as permission to replace a degree in every occupation. The proposed entry and professional activity must remain temporary.
Describe the employer’s purpose for hiring
Ask what decisions and deliverables belong to the worker and which tasks occupy an ordinary week. A sales title could obscure qualifying duties or accurately describe nonqualifying work; the title alone decides neither. The account should remain accurate when compared with the actual offer and the employer’s expectations. A degree from an institution outside Canada, Mexico and the United States requires evaluation by a reliable service specializing in foreign credentials.
Check ownership and the entry process
Disclose any ownership or control in the US enterprise receiving the services; providing services to a U.S. entity solely owned or controlled by the applicant is prohibited TN self-employment; foreign ownership alone is not that bar. Canadians generally can request TN admission without a TN visa at an appropriate entry location, while Mexican nationals generally require the visa process. An appropriate employer petition may be another procedural step; no offer guarantees admission.
Give the household its own work assessment
A spouse’s TD status provides no employment authorization. Keeping a Canadian business registration does not settle whether proposed activity physically performed in the United States is authorized. Record the actual work location and responsibilities instead of treating a Canadian customer or licence as US permission.
Use the listed profession’s own credential rule
The Computer Systems Analyst entry accepts either a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or a post-secondary diploma or certificate together with three years of experience. The management-consultant listing permits a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or documented equivalent professional experience of five years as a management consultant or in a specialty related to the consulting agreement. Industrial contracting employers often use "engineer" loosely for roles that are properly engineering technologist or technician positions, which sit under a different Appendix 2 entry with its own rules. Institutions typically hold several records beyond the transcript: a degree conferral or completion letter on registrar letterhead, a certified statement naming the credential and the date awarded, the diploma itself, and in some cases a verifiable online credential record. Published guidance treats a Scientific Technician or Technologist as working in direct support of a professional in one of those listed disciplines. Canadian citizens seeking TN admission ordinarily present themselves at a port of entry or a preclearance facility with the supporting documents in hand, and no visa is issued in advance; alternatively the American employer files Form I-129 and the approval is presented on arrival. For Canadian citizens, the choice is ordinarily between seeking TN classification with supporting records when arriving for inspection and an employer's USCIS petition on Form I-129; the sequence depends on facts and planned travel. A technologist admitted to support engineering work who is then assigned to supervise a sheet-metal line has left the profession claimed, and any later extension or re-entry will be measured against what actually happened.
