Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Confirm the professional requirement
TN is for qualifying Canadian or Mexican citizens undertaking prearranged professional activity in a listed USMCA profession. Check that profession’s own degree, licence or permitted alternative and the actual duties. Experience is not a universal substitute for an unfinished degree. The proposed entry and professional activity must remain temporary.
Establish when the qualification exists
Obtain accurate evidence from the institution about completion and conferral, and have the required qualification assessed for the proposed application date. Distinguish a transcript, completion letter and diploma rather than assuming every school document establishes the same fact. A degree from an institution outside Canada, Mexico and the United States requires evaluation by a reliable service specializing in foreign credentials.
Check the employment and procedural route
Document duties, pay, duration and the real employer relationship, including ownership. Providing services to a U.S. entity solely owned or controlled by the applicant is prohibited TN self-employment; foreign ownership alone is not that bar. Canadians generally may seek TN admission without a TN visa; Mexican nationals generally use the visa route, with an employer petition where appropriate.
The employer letter must describe professional practice
The letter should state the profession by its listed name, describe duties that are forestry duties, such as inventory, harvest planning, regeneration assessment and compliance with state forest-practice rules, and give the location, remuneration and intended length of stay. Once the degree comparison and licensing question are answered, assemble the job offer, duty description, transcripts, evaluation report, and any licensing correspondence into one file the reviewer can assess as a whole. Officers compare the credential presented with the credential the listing names for that profession, and a technology diploma is not a baccalaureate in engineering however similar the coursework. Management Consultant can be reached through five years of relevant work, and Scientific Technician or Technologist is reached through theoretical knowledge plus demonstrated ability rather than through any particular credential. For engineers, the listing provides a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree or state or provincial licence; U.S. practice authority remains a separate question. Course catalogue excerpts can illuminate a field of study, yet cannot make a diploma satisfy a degree-only occupation. A Canadian professional may request TN classification at a border inspection point or preclearance facility; if USCIS is the selected procedure, the U.S. employer files Form I-129 directly with that agency. The applicant should also warn the institution promptly about a changed departure date, a delayed credential evaluation or a family circumstance that moves the start, because an institution told late may already have offered the position to someone else.
Apply the specific credential rule for the listed profession
Meeting a TN credential alternative does not automatically confer every licence or authorization needed to practise in the U.S. jurisdiction. Read the appendix entry for the profession being claimed and note precisely what it accepts: some entries require a specific degree, others admit stated alternatives, and experience substitutes only where that entry says so. The letter should describe the systems analysed, the requirements gathered and the design decisions made, in enough detail that the officer can recognise the listed profession. A Canadian citizen may apply at the port of entry or the cooperative may file an I-129 petition; either way the officer compares the letter with the governing documents if asked.
